hedging plant ideas please

tansyetansye Posts: 2
Hi, I am looking to plant a new hedge at the front of the house, in full sun (when there is some!) and want it to look good all year round with as long a flowering season as possible. It will be in a raised bed so soil type or condition can be managed. Only want it to get to 4ft or so. Any ideas please?

Very few formal hedges have much in the way of blooms, as regular clipping tends to remove the flowering wood.

Were you thinking of a formal clipped hedge, or something more in the way of a row of flowering shrubby plants that would act as a boundary marker'?  If the latter, I was thinking that if the conditions are suitable, a cistus might fit the bill   https://inlandvalleygardenplanner.org /plants/cistus-x-purpureus/

Also, whereabouts are you?  Something that would perform well in the south might struggle in the north-east, especially if there are 'coastal breezes' to contend with.

Ooh yes, what a good idea, thank you. I had a fantastic white one of these in my back garden which was always a mass of flowers but we rented the house out for 3 years and nothing was done, so last year when we returned I cut it hard back as it had got so out control, but there are no signs of life on it yet this year, so I think I may have killed it!
