Brown Clematis

Hi all, I wondered if you could help please? I have a long standing clematis (6-7 years), it’s been beautiful every year, my pride and joy! This year however it is completely brown and you would think it had died. When I tried to snap it though it showed green stem beneath the brown. It doesn’t look like any leaves are trying to grow though. Can anybody tell me what has happened or if there is a way to recur it? Thanks for any help I advance.

  • If there is green under the bark it is still alive. The cold, wet, freezing of this winter has probably knocked it back. My clematis are much smaller, newly planted last year but they look the same as yours, probably worse. It is still early but mine have new shoots growing so yours will probably be fine. Keep an eye on it and in a month or two cut out all of the dead non shooting growth, give it a slow release fertilizer and enjoy.
  • Awwwww thank you , so relieved, I have been checking it every day! I shall do as you suggest :) , thanks again!
