A glorious plant Michael, and one very much for the more discerning gardener - the spiny thorns can put people off, I admit it does me and I grow lots of roses. One sees this plant against walls in the better gardens...
My favourite Ribes are odoratum which is in full bloom now [why do people buy Forsythia when they could have this?].. and Ribes gordonianum, a most graceful and floriferous large shrub...
Thanks for sharing your plant. I hope it does well for you...
I see Ribes laurifolium is now available but it seems a bit demanding but like any variety of plant each gardener has their own favourites that just keeps on growing. The odoratum looks nice but I wouldn't be keen on the gordonianum but it has made me aware of them now. I was worried about how hardy my Ribes speciosum was going to be and it survived the winter as I had it out until recently and took it into the greenhouse for its flowers, so that might be cheating to a degree lol.
I have roses as well and plenty of scratches to show for them and a few Rubus occidentalis that I grew from seed and have now in containers with also Rubus spectabilis that I also grew from seed. So you start with one plant and it goes from there.
I took cuttings of the Ribes speciosum, incase it was a bad winter but it turns out the plant is hardier than I thought but it is worth having. I just don't know why people don't have more of these plants?
