Hello Frances. It could be that your lemon tree has aphids. These secrete a sticky, sugary deposit (loved by ants who will 'farm' aphids for this). Check your tree carefully. If its possible and you do find aphids, take your tree outside and hose it down. If you keep your eye on things your tree should not be adversely affected.

  • Citrus trees grown indoors are particularly prone to scale insects. If you look on the underside of the leaves or on the trunk you will see flat, slightly ovoid pale brown scales attached which are quite difficult to remove. You have to scratch them with your finger nail they hang on so tight and do not look like run of the mill bugs. I use meths., to clean my plants when affected. It is important to ease each leaf away from the branch  and use a small paint brush to push the meths., right down into the joint as that is where a lot hide, it usually takes 2-3 attempts to clean the tree completely.

  • Thank you both I found this very helpful I hope this resolves the problem

I found that a soapy spray made with non bio washing liquid worked well on scale insect. That could with regulag outdoor spells. Lemons like all citrus need regular humidity. So give them a misty spray once or twice a week
