Blooming Daisies

Dilly3Dilly3 Posts: 91
The daisies I grew from seed last year  and planted in the lawn are growing really well now the warmer weather has arrived but they are so tall. Some of the stalks are 6" is this normal ?  I was expecting them to be a bit shorter . Is it because they are newly planted and will they become shorter in the future?
Thanks for your time .

Depends on what kind of daisy - ordinary wild kind or bellis perennis border kind.  I find that in the beds, where they are undisturbed till hoed or forked out, the "wild" kind grow several inches tall and produce bonny but unwanted flowers so I leave them for early bees till other flowers appear and then hoik them all out.

The same plants in teh lawn start tall, get mown and then get progressively shorter - as do the dandelions - so they end up flowering on very short stems and very flat rosettes of leaves as the mowing and season continues.

Hi , they are the Bellis perennis Daisy which are for the lawn I think 😀
i hope what you say about them getting shorter the more I cut the grass happens.
They look nice but being tall looks a bit odd, if you know what I mean . Thanks .

Those won’t get any shorter, they are meant for tubs and borders.

The daisies I sowed and put in my 'meadow lawn' are also flowering at about 6" tall.Once I start cutting them they should hug the ground more.

    • I am trying to post a photo of them but it's not as easy as the old forum , well I can't work out how to do it 😬 They aren't those coloured type of Bellis  daisies Lyn  I had some of those years ago . I'm hoping mine are the meadow ones like yours madpenguin .

I thought you dont cut a meadow lawn until autumn after everything’s flowered and set seeds?
Have you grown the ornamental ones as well for the meadow.

Lawn daisies have leaves that are flat on the ground, below the level of the mower blades usually.

To post a pic, click on the little rectangle with a mountain outline in it then proceed as before to select a photo file.
