Clematis Montana - what is wrong with it?

I planted clematis Montana early 2016 which grew very well for 2 years. This year small buds appeared but have now dried out and there are a couple of odd looking shoots coming from one of the original stems. The plant looks almost dead. Is it worth pruning it back or should I abandon it? Does anyone know what has caused this? My other clematis are doing well with the growth I expect.

    Hi  :)
Can you post some photos for us ... of the dried out buds, the odd looking shoots and the whole plant please.
Where is the clematis planted and what's the soil like?

  • Here are some pix - not very clear I'm afraid.  The clematis is planted with its roots in the shade topped with a thin layer of slate and is (or was) climbing up and across a garden shed.  The soil is free draining and loamy.

I suspect it's been frosted at just the wrong time for tender new foliage and flower buds.
That last pic looks like it's been chewed too so slugs or snails?  They do treat new clem shoots as caviar.

As there are unlikely to be enough surviving buds to make a show this year I suggest you cut it back hard to any low shoots then, once cleared, give it a good feed of slow release clematis, rose or tomato food and an instant tonic of liquid tomato food and then cross your fingers.

  • Thanks and what you say makes sense.  I will try cutting it back etc and keep my fingers crossed.
