Planting beneath pleached trees

I have just had some evergreen oak pleached trees planted (quercus ilex) and am looking for advice as to wha ti best to plant underneath them to add interest (preferably perennials)?  There should still be a reasonable amount of sun - so shade is not the issue - rather things that will not interfere with the rootballs of the trees. Advice welcomed.

It depends on your soil - sandy; clay, loam, stony, well-drained, moisture retentive; the aspect; how exposed you are to strong winds/salt air/heavy frosts and also what colour scheme, if any, you have in mind.
