Thank you so much Fristillary, Sussexsun and Josusa47 for replying and your advice! Fristillary I will spread out the ones I have planted some more and do the same with the ones I have still to plant. How long do the seeds take to flower? Can I expect anything in the summer or am I being far too demanding?!!
Sussexsun I will look into dividing and how to do it effectively and check out the supermarkets you mentioned. Josusa47 I am going to look at the seedandplant section and the green plant swap, looking forward to learning a lot more!
So sorry Raisingirl, Hostafan, Mary, Blue Onion and hogweed, for splitting my replies!
Raisingirl, thank you so much for all your advice. I am definitely going to source some Erigeron. I did buy a job lot of helianthemums but got a long stalk type variety and then the next day saw a much more attractive variety, ah well I am learning! The geranium rozanne sounds ideal too and flowering into November is quite something :-) when you mention growing a single type of bulb to tie it visually, should I alternate this with something else? I have bought quite a lot of hebe rakaiensis, sedums, euphorbias and some grasses or do you suggest something else? The main section of the rockery is very long and I am not sure how to approach this? I love the nasturtium idea and will start looking into that.
Hostafan will def ask on Freecycle, great idea. Mary, thank you, good to hear! Blueonion will def look into more rocks idea, thanks.
Borderline, thank you, will check to see if the hebes I bought are dwarf variety, I hope so as I got 7 of them!
Hogweed, many thanks for advice re seeds. Silly question but if I sow now is this ready for next year?!

It was just a thought as you said you felt it was bitty - any sort of rhythmic planting where you repeat either a specific plant (such as your hebes) or a leaf shape such as the grasses along the length of the bed can make it look more coherent. If you go to local gardens that have long borders you'll often see this done. In fact, once you 'get your eye in' - you'll see it everywhere you see long borders
I suggested bulbs mostly because they are relatively cheap and if you want to break out of the horizontal, you can get drama and height very quickly - tall alliums, for example will be full height next spring if planted this autumn. But you could also use small groups of dwarf daffs or species tulips if you wanted to stay low
