Feeling overwhelmed

    Isn’t decide what you want from a garden, and how much work you’re prepared/able to put in as a starting point. There’s no point having something which will require weekly effort if you are only go put a couple of hours in every few weeks, and likewise there’s no fun in having an easy but low maintenance space if you want to be out there growing things, trying new plants etc. 

    Then consider what kind of gardens appea to you most. Formal and architectural, romantic and cottagey, functional and tidy etc. 

    Once you you have a style in mind then it’s much easier to make a design (which can be purely in your mind or borrowed from elsewhere) plan to get going.

    The knowledge side of it can be learned, being realistic about the effort side is the key start point I think

    Best advice I was given was to allow space for the plants to grow and not be tempted to overcrowd everything to fill in the bare space.  Also be sure to shop around a few garden centres to get a good price.
