One important thing to consider whatever you buy is the length of the shaft. I have a big petrol strimmer with a full harness, but the shaft is too long I'm (5'7) so even with the harness set as high as possible the blade (or string) faces up away from me rather than down away, so the back of the guard catches on everything and makes it impossible to use.
I have the B+D 18v lithium battery strimmer and hedge trimmer....bought separately, each came with a battery so always have one charged fully at least. they do the trick, have lasted four years so far....both seem in good order still.
hedge trimmer...whilst not seemingly the question raised, but i second the point made above that they can be heavy after stretching with them for a period of time....so only buy one as large as you need and no more...but yes lithium battery ones are much lighter than petrol, safer long term than wired ( i've chopped two wired ones before....thankfully no harm, just a lot of lost time and energy).
Thanks all for your contributions and although we favoured Black and Decker we could not find a supplier over here - in fact B&D seems to have gone from being sold in most garden/machine type shops to be impossible to find - odd we thought. So OH ended up buying a model by Greenworks (cordless/battery) which I had never heard of so we will see well it performs over time.
