Possible Japanese Knotweed?

Hi there,

I'm not a gardener by any stretch of the imagination but I do enjoy gardens. However, after having bark chip laid over my entire rear garden in preparation for a Spring make-over I came across these tuber weeds growing through.

Are they Japanese Knotweed? If so, then I strongly suspect that they were 'imported' from the bark chips ... great!

Any help is much appreciated :)

NO, not knotweed, probably Arum italicum.
How can you lie there and think of England

Definitely not. :) Congratulations to not having the worst weed ever! ;) It looks more like some kind of Persicaria lapathifolia. But i'm not sure.
  • Difficult to get rid of but not impossible.  It does spread - we have them in our garden and over the years have found it popping up in various parts of the garden.

Pheeeew!!! Many thanks for confirming! The plant suddenly sprung up from nowhere; the white, tuber-like roots were quite deep and difficult to remove - I suspected the worst.

It does appear to have the shape of the Arum italicum leaf, but less so Persicaria lapathifolia. Either way, I'm relieved.

I just posted as yours came in Guernsey Donkey2 - can you also confirm it isn't JK?

Best course of action to remove if it is unwanted?

Just cover it, like with some plastic with weights on it or a pool for a couple of years.

Not JKW. I agree with punkdoc, it looks like Arum italicum.
  • Many thanks for all your help.
  • No, it certainly isn't JKW - we wouldn't tolerate it in our garden but the Arum is acceptable but best kept under control if you can.
