To be honest I'm probably going to put them in the ground early and hope for good weather and sow a second crop in a few weeks to be ready to go in as a back up at the proper time.

Classic problem with runners, not helped by Aldi selling them 2 weeks ago.

Well I didn't know about Aldi, I read instructions on back of packet, sew April to May so thought I was being organised as was always behind last time!!
  • Thank you Joyce, I may not have kept them warm enough, also too wet. Will try again, this time in pots and on the windowsill instead of a cold greenhouse.  So good to get advice, much appreciated.

Warm window still above a radiator in damp but not wet compost seemed to work a bit too well...

Loo rolls because they have deep roots, yes, I am SE UK they will get sown May out beginning of June, you can start to harden them off outside, (put them out in the day bring them back in at night)Jude, too early not warm enough, another thread on here, about the type I have grown Firestorm for several years with a fantastic crop.

I did the same but went further and planted them out far too early! They have a fleece blanket now and keeping everything crossed but will probably sow again in early May as a back up! New allotment this year so trying vegetables for the first time it's a bit trial and error!

Yes I’ve planted most of mine out now; have some in plant pot inside. Will see rest of seeds mid May. It’s annoying that seed packet says sew April to May; they grew so much in 2 weeks

To be fair, in some years and in some places you'd get away with sowing them in early April and planting out in May. The lesson actually is not to follow what the seed packets say, but to get to know your own local climate and adjust the 'standard' advice to suit where you live. Lyn's rule about 1st May works for her location. If you lived in a sheltered spot near Penzance, or somewhere near the centre of London, you could probably be a week or two earlier and if you live in some parts of Northern England or Scotland 1st May is still much too soon. Seed packets are sold nationally and cover all eventualities. As a result, they are rarely helpful. But you'll only get to know really what you need to do by getting it wrong quite a lot, so think of yourself as well on the way to expertise  :)

  • I too sowed to early and because they got so big I have planted them out. I have been covering with fleece. They seem to have survived the 3*C night but we shall see. IveIsown more in case.
