Fence Replacement

We lost our 6ft fence recently due to old age and high winds, and were thinking of replacing it with a hedge.  Is there anybody out there that can suggest a suitable type that will tolerate heavy clay soil and is reasonably fast growing, a row of close plated shrubs would be preferable but not essential

Have you got room for a hedge? At least 3-4 ft width would be needed and the roots will starve the soil for another 3ft each side. You could try a few ornamental shrubs instead.

I have to say, I have lots of old hedging (up to 6 ft high) and have borders under them, with flowers and veg. They are fine. I think it depends a lot of the type of hedge you have.

Thanks Fire.  Can you tell me what variety of plant they are.
