OK, guys and girls...more help needed as I feel so sorry for my poor little lime tree. I have had it indoors in a sunny spot, keeping it watered and fed. It has grown tall, skinny stems with leaves although the lower, thicker leaves are looking brown around the edges. I have not pruned any of the brown stems off as I didn't want to give it any more trauma. But after a year, should I re-pot, prune, or what? No flowers, but after it was nearly killed I wasn't expecting anything too soon. But advice would be welcome. Thanks.
I think the main tree has died and the roots are sending up shoots (aka suckers.) I also feel certain that the main tree will not spring back into life, unfortunately. Try scraping a small amount of bark back on each dead branch, starting at the top. If you see green underneath any parts, they may recover, so leave them. Brown underneath the bark = dead material, so prune out. If it's grafted onto a rootstock, it is that which is growing now and may not fruit, or may try to grow into a huge tree. If it was sown from seed, the new growth will be identical to the old tree. Either way, you can cut off the old tree completely at soil level and nurture and train the new shoot(s) into a new tree or bush.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
