Curly runner beans drive me mad so I grow Enorma, long, straight, good cropper, exhibition variety if you fancy trying your hand at your local Horticultural Show. I also grow Cobra, a climbing French bean, always a good crop.
Thank you, everyone, for all your replies and suggestions. I've certainly got some food for there. I like French beans, but it's so cold and wet here that never do very well. I grow a few of the dwarf ones for their flowers though as they're so nice. I'll let you know which I decide!
Firestorm for several years really good crop, you were very lucky to get a good crop AND not water them, they are usually very thirsty! French beans 2 years ago, Annabel, 1kg from each plant, couldnt get them last year, cannot remember what I grew but they werent very successful, so its Annabel again this year.Used to grow Polestar runners, but found they were a bit stringy.
I am in the USA, NW Montana and grew Benchmaster and Achievement this year as well as Scarlet runner beans. Golden Sunshine, and Achievement did wonderfully and Benchmaster too. (Hard to tell the saved seeds apart) I will be growing both next year for sure. They loved our cool spring and oh too short summer, and produced like crazy.
I still grow seed I save from the original Stenner strain, now many years old and sold commercially as Enorma, still get good crops even though the seed must be well diluted.
