    Hello madpenguin
Yes , I would remove all brown or dead stems as low to the ground as possible ;if you cut halfway down into green stems they will 'branch' and form unsightly wispy green cord-like stems .
Likes wet soil but can be invasive in this ; mine grows in ordinary loam and I control by simply digging up the parts I don't want .
Sometimes sold as an aquatic , but not strictly so !

When I say 'aquatic' , more of a marginal plant .

    Thanks all.
I intend to plant it in a container with a reservoir so can keep it damp and not allow it to invade anywhere!!
Maybe just cut down the worst stems for now and see how it grows.
