I got a couple of shrubs I'd never heard of today. Will investigate tomorrow -anyway  they were £1 each.
Would post a pic - but they're just sticks that passed the scratch test.
    In London. Keen but lazy.

I've just bought a few lovely large clematis plants for £3. So satisfying.

  • I once got a tray of neglected hellebores in Focus for next to nothing. I tended and planted them out, and ten years later they have thrived and spread, giving me huge pleasure every spring.

Just last week I got a tray of six fat primulas from Homebase, down to half price (under £2), a bit pot-bound but with lots of life in them yet. They should last for years.

My best bargains, though, were when a small and badly run local garden centre was closing down. After it officially closed, they had a man there to guard it and sell off stock to any locals who cared to come and rummage. It wasn't just plants, there were seed trays, flower pots, compost etc. We haggled and paid whatever low price we could agree on. Eventually he left and local people just wandered in to help themselves. We knew that otherwise the plants would die and all the rest would end up in a skip or a bonfire. I got various plants, many of which survived. I refer to them as my "rescue plants".
