Suggestions of climbers for conservatory please

Pete360Pete360 Posts: 2
Hi,

First time I ever posted anything on here, but thought this would be the perfect place for some good suggestions for climbers to plant in my unheated, south-facing conservatory... I had a Mandevillia, which did fantastically over the summer but went rapidly down hill after that – whether it was the cold snap or it got waterlogged I don't know, but my Bougainvillea survived unscathed in the same space!

Anyway I'm looking for a good replacement (the is a little less easier to kill off)... I have a trellis in place but only room for a 12-inch pot max.

Thanks!

I couldn’t grow anything in my south facing conservatory the temperature hit well over 50c last year, even the geraniums had to come, unless you have sun shades in yours.

  • Plumbago makes a lovely conservatory climber or trailer, with sky blue flowers, also trailing geraniums, tied in to the trellis would cope with hot dry conditions. Bourganvillia ? (spelling) could be a bit frost tender but come in lovely colours.

Sollya heterophylla.  I used to grow this in my garden and loved it.  We had both blue and pink varieties but both succumbed to a hard winter. Friends have a mature one in their unheated conservatory, so the extra protection is probably all they need to survive our winters.

Not climbers ,I have 2 pots of cyperus alternifolius in pots in mine. I can leave them standing in a couple of inches of water and they take all the heat of summer and the chill of winter.
Our conservatory is also south facing and unheated.

Wow... thanks for all the suggestions! I'm probably going to end up putting loads in now :)

Thanks  for that, it’s given me some ideas, having had to take all my plants out because of the heat, I’ll have a look at some of those tropical ones.

What about Billardiera Longiflora, Purple Appleberry. Very fine leaves and pale yellow flowers followed by small/medium amazing purple berries in autumn that positively glow. Very decorative and doesn't swamp the areas it grows on. I do think this could be brought outside in the summer and back in around autumn time.

If I had a conservatory, I would grow, without doubt, abuliton Nabob. Not a climber, but beyond gorgeous.
