Dahlia question

I am travelling for four months from summer to fall and want to know if it is OK for me to store my daily evolves an extra year and plant them next year. I took them out last October and I want to plant them next spring. Will this work? Or will they be dead? There is no one to water them and also I will be away for when they’re all in bloom. No point in doing all the work. But I don’t really want to lose them.

No I'm sorry ... the tubers aren't dormant like seeds ... they will try to grow this spring whatever you do.

Rather than waste them could you give them to someone. They don’t last and will shrivel up, dry out and die.

  • Why not just plant them, mark where they are and let them get on with growing and flowering, even though you are not there. If they die it is no different to them dying out of the ground. They will definitely not survive unplanted. You will probably come home to so juicy fat tubers ready for next year.

I agree. Why not plant them out then they will be able to grow and get better.  Dig them out when you get back or put a cover over to keep them sheltered and see what comes up again the next spring.
