  I would put a square or circle of plastic inside the base of the coir but not over the whole surface before you add compost and plants.  You want to retain some moisture when watering but not drown the roots.

  I also do as obelixx suggests.
  Coir matting in the basket first, then I line it with a circle cut from an old compost bag, fill with compost and plants - give it a good water then poke a few holes through the lining a couple of inches from the bottom for drainage

  Last year I bought little mats of a water retaining material, three in a pack from the pound shop. They were very good and held the water.
