Gosh, @Igrowfromseed,  that looks a very impressive piece of work! I like the water feature.   Are you now planning any planting?  Some ferns or alpines would look good tucked into some of those crevices.

  • Hi Lizzie, there is soil and a membrane under the slate chippings so will be looking at putting a few plants in. I quite like to idea of grasses with some lavender at the front. On the top row of gabions some large planters should look good and help break up the outline of the wqoden fence. The fence will be painted a slate colour so will hopefully blend in.  Looking at either a pergola or a farmer's garden pod (John Lewis) to go at the wall end of the project. Anyone got any experience with these pods?

  • Yes we got a local firm, Anglesey Turf. Steve did a great job with the gabions which also served as support walls. Very pleased with the final reult.
  • Here's the waterfall in action. Lovely to hear the sound of water.

id get a short retaining wall at the bottom, just high enough to use as a seat would be good.
then i'd potentially terrace it, whether thats with natural materials like stones (a la rockery) or with timber beams or stone walls that would be up to you, i'd get some shrubs at the top of the bank to cover that fence and deflect more wind then the slope (or terraces) you cold really plant as you wish

Those gabions are going to be great for wildlife @Igrowfromseed and I love the water feature.  My inclination would be to soften it a little with some greenery but I expect you've already got that planned.

Thank you for the comments. For the waterfall I was thinking of a planter with ferns in the front and ? planters with bamboo on the sides. Waterfall could do with some wind protection. Good comment about gabions and wildlife.
