Chelsea Flower Show - Same day ticket returns

Hello all,
I was a bit bone idle and waited too long to get my Chelsea Flower Show tickets
I've managed to get some 5.30pm tickets for the Wednesday members only day, but I've never been before and know I'll want to spend the whole day there to see it properly.
So, I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with buying tickets at the box office on the day, that have been returned? I've checked with RHS and it is possible to get these, but I'm interested to know if anyone's successfully done this? If so, do you need to get there for box office opening time (0700) or show opening time (0800) to increase your chances of success? Or does it not really matter, because it's total pot luck?! I ask, because it'll take me 1.5hrs to travel to Chelsea and I have to book an advance train ticket. I'm worried that I'll do this, get there for 0800, have no luck and have to wait around London 'til I can use my 5.30pm ticket after all!
I know noone can guarantee me a ticket, but any pearls of wisdom from veteran show attendees would be appreciated
