A foot apart short get taller in the end! The trunks will be 6” diameter, they will be touching each other, now room for side shoots.
Plenty of good advise here, but up to you in the end, you can always dig them up and throw them away in a few years time.

Sorry but I'm not sure I see an issue here - yes they are 1ft apart, but have put on plenty of growth in the 2 years, knitting together well (not many gaps left) and have also increased in height.  Is it a problem then if one day the trunks begin to touch?  I do  believe that they can reach at least 2 metres sooner or later, my question was how much quicker it would take a hedge to do this planted at 22ft in terms of spacing rather than 1ft.

I certainly won't ever be digging the originals out, they are lovely and growing well (around 1m high now).

Someone mentioned disputes - surely not for closely spaced plants?   1m gaps with a 5m height, maybe?

Sorry to say this but I’m lost! Feel totally confused with this thread!
  • read the original post.      trying to establish how much quicker 60cm-tall laurels spaced at 60cm apart would gain height compared to 60cm-tall laurels spaced at 30cm apart.

the issue of 'touching trunks' seems to have been raised for ones planted at 30cm apart.   i wonder how tall an unpruned laurel with a 6 inch trunk diameter would be.   i imagine they would take a long time to gain a girth of that diameter, and even if they do touch , does that mean disaster and no more height?
