Support for climbing plants

Hello everyone!
I would like to grow a climber or two up the west facing side of my house. Looking online, trellis seems expensive. The delivery costs more than the trellis panel!!Do you have any other ideas of what I could use please?

You could use horizontal wire tensioned thru a set of vine eyes at 12 to 18"/30 to 40cm intervals up your wall, depending on what you plan to grow.   Make sure you use good quality rawl plugs to hold the vine eyes which you will fin in any good DIY stall.  Wire and tensioners can be found in the wire mesh fencing section.  Easy to make to fit your wall, easy to transport yourself and it will last a lot longer than wooden trellis panels.

  • Thankyou Obelixx. Do I drill into the brick or mortar?

I'm no expert but I reckon the bricks will be stronger.

Fix the vine eyes into the cement joints between the bricks, not the bricks themselves.

If you fix them into the bricks you may cause cracking ... frost will get into and expand the cracks and the brick will be damaged and need replacing ... a much bigger (and more expensive) job than replacing a cement joint.

I'd always drill into the brick. If the hole's the right size for the plug, there should be no danger of cracking. Mortar is unpredictable to say the least.
  • Bearing in mind I'm an amateur DIYer?

It’s extremely good but you will need to either put battens on your wall or bang tall stakes in to tack it too.
