Does anyone have any idea's what this black soot is on my rhododendron and forest flame is. I do have a suspicion that it's smoke from neighbours chiminea.

    Thanks Pete8 I have looked through the link and it is sooty mould. Will have to get insectaside to deal with it. Thanks for response. X

    It often happens when the plant is weak - its natural defenses are low and bugs take advantage  - a good tonic is seaweed extract and/or sequestered iron which will give your plants a boost and rejuvenate their defenses

    It'd be a good idea to try and find out which bugs are causing the problem, and checking that they are still present. The mould has likely grown over winter as a result of what happened last summer - they may have moved on by now
