Talking about AT. How many would prefer him to be back on Gardeners World instead of Monty. I did prefer AT as he covered a lot more practical gardening in a simplistic way that encouraged novice gardeners to understand and be encouraged to garden

Please don't start an anti-Monty deluge again. We had one last week.

    Peace and love.

Lots of votes for AT then, I think I will start with his book (full title ‘How to Garden: Perennial Garden Plants’) and see how I get on. I like the idea of ‘glowering shrubs’ Steve  :)

I would second Nut's suggestion and recommend you to acquire or borrow the DVDs and books of his How to Be a Gardener series on the Beeb.  He starts at the beginning explaining the how, when, what and why of plants and their cultivation and goes on to explain how to look after them thru the gardening year and then designing and/or renovating borders and fixing problems.

    Brilliant stuff.

After the recommendation of watching AT's How to Be a Gardener I have been watching the episodes online (I already have the book). What a really interesting and informative programme, I would say incredibly useful and a must for beginners who want to learn more. Thank you Nut and Obelixx!

Sorry, and thanks for the tip from me too. I promise to watch them but we are having a ‘bit of weather’ just now so the satellite internet is not stable enough and evening signal is always dodgy anyway, which is where books come in handy!

Try the DVDs then.  Am***n are bound to have them.   Excellent references I reckon for all sorts of garden jobs and features.

I second the recommendations of AT's books, got most of them and refer to them regularly. His "How to be a Gardener" is brilliant for beginners (which I'm not) but I still refer to it quite often. The smaller books on individual topics are mostly covered by the big one so it could work out cheaper to get it. Claire Austin's book on Perennials is also good as is anything by Beth Chatto. I assume Carol Klein's books are also good?

Links to all the BBC episodes are here. They are not all on Youtube, as far as I can see.
