Bare root phlox freebies

I've just potted up some free phlox paniculata sent as a free gift. Is it too early to put the pots outside? I don't have much room left inside!

I had some free too, but before the winter. I potted them up with advice from the forum and left them in my cold frame over winter. They even survived the snow and looked frozen solid at one point. They are now out of the cold frame and are starting to shoot and look healthy so yours probably will be OK outside but place in a protected spot. I was advised to put them in with the crown just proud. Good luck. I'm sure you'll get some more good tips on the forum from those who are bit more experienced than me.

Are they in pots or bare rooted, either way they need to be protected from frost. I am assuming you do not have a greenhouse, so I would place them in a cardboard box and wrap them in newspaper at night. Leave them off the ground aswell for futher protection.
Perennial Phlox are tought plants and very frost hardy but small plants need protecting untill they have started to grow AV bigger root ball. You may need to re-pot them once they get growing.

Thanks both! I don't have a greenhouse but we have an unheated conservatory so I can put them in there if it's going to be frosty.

Once they've grown a bit I'm going to give them to someone to put in the garden. I don't have anywhere to put them but I'm sure I'll find some family or friends to rehome them!
  • I pot mine up but leave them either outside in a sheltered spot or into an open structure with a bit of shelter. Once they get going they'll be planted into the ground.
