Teucruim Purple Tails

StevedaylillyStevedaylilly Posts: 1,102
I require a perennial plant that will survive dry soil and part to dappled shade. The planting will be under a Silver Birch tree and partly under large conifer
I has been suggested by a fellow gardener that Teucruim will grow it this aspect as it is drought tolerant when established
However, I will be improving the soil under both trees to ensure a better survival rate for these plants. But I expect the area's under both trees to be dry out over time although I do mulch these area every spring
My question is as anybody had experience of this plant and is it a good surviver in the aspect I have mentioned
Thank you

    Hello greenfingers steve

One garden I look after has the lower growing species Teucrium chamaedrys 'prostratum' . This is growing around and through a tall Leylandii hedge . Very dry and partially shaded , but the plant does OK !

    Hi Paul
Thank you for your reply. Sound as if it will do the job. I have checked the RHS and a few other sites and most are stating it requires full sun and a very moist but well drained soil. Then other sites are stating it will grow in any aspect and drought tolerant once established. Possisbly, it's a bit of both , but happy that it's got staying power
    Thanks again

The key words there are 'drought tolerant once established' ; many people plant drought tolerant plants then 'forget' to water them !
Anyway , glad to have helped gs!!
