Here's how I do mine @Yviestevie I remove the loose soil and just pick up the clump and gently twist it until bids feel like they're coming free from the main clump then give them a bit of a snap to form a new plant. I hope this helps.
I have to say, I bring mine into the polytunnel. You can see where I cut the clump with the spade when I dug it up in Autumn. It's not the cold here, but the sodden wet Devon clay soil. Empress Wu is FAB.
How come you are splitting them down Hosta, they must make quite a display at that size, what variety is that hosta. Mine are taking quite a while to get going. Are them giant agapanthus in the background ?
@Perki The first batch are Tropicanna Black. The second is an unknown beautiful coral flowered variety which was given to me. I'm leaving some big clumps and splitting some to reform into big clumps for next year. They are agapanthus in the background.
@Hostafan1what are you going to do with all those new plants? I think mine died this year with the low temperatures we've been having. I have given so many away over the last few years. ....I think I'll be asking back one or two this year .
