Will a clematis survive if base is in shade?

NwjblakeNwjblake Posts: 15
I have a little spot in my garden behind the shed and I would like to put a clematis in a pot in there and train it onto the wall above/behind the shed. Here it will get full sun, but until it has grown that big, it will be entirely in shade. Will the clematis survive? The type I’ve bought is called a Clematis Jackmani.

thanks for your help,
Nick

As long as you prepare the soil well, give it a good deep hole so it is several inches deeper than it was in the pot and then water well before and after planting and while it's getting established - which can take a year or two - it should be fine.

I'm growing a montana over my shed and until it gets to the roof of the shed it's in shade for most of the day.  Its taken off big style.

From what the OP has said I think he/she intends to keep the clematis in the pot ... I hope it's a large pot ... Jackmanii is quite a large clematis and will need plenty of moisture retaining compost (I suggest a mix of JI No 3 loambased with the addition of come organic material such as leaf mould, garden compost or MPC).

That said, it should be fine with its roots in the shade ... in fact I have found that is preferable to having the base of the clematis in the sun.

That is correct. I have a fairly large pot for it so I’ll take your advice on the mix and hope it will be ok.

Oh didn't see that it is Jackmanii, wouldn't normally keep that in a pot.

There may be a problem with it getting enough water too.  :|
  • Probably not the true clematis Jackmanii, this was, apparently, lost many years ago.

The standard advice for all Clematis is head in the sun feet in the shade. I too would put it in the ground if you can.

Most Clematis require a sunny aspect but they prefer to have their root base shaded as they loose moisture, in this area very easily, if not shaded. A sunny aspect for plants is full sun over 6 hours. It should be fine as long as your feed it but I would try and plant it in the ground as it will be little less work and better for the plant
