Clematis Perle d Azure

lilysillylilysilly Posts: 511
Hi everyone. I have been having a good think about what clematis to add to my garden this year and really fancy a blue group 3 clematis. It is to go at the end of my south facing garden up a brick wall on wires. There is a yellow Graham Thomas rose up there and a good few white and pale yellow lupins and other white flowers so l thought a nice blue climber would look good.
My question is does anyone already grow Perle d Azure? Is it a healthy grower with abundant flowers? Are it's stems brittle and snap easily? I'm quite clumsy and my Ville de Lyon clematis ends up losing a few stems when l try and tie it in.
So any advise about Perle d Azure or any other recommendations of a good blue clematis would be very welcome.

I grow it up a north wall. Its new shoots are very very brittle, hard to tie in without snapping them. It has lots of flowers but in the last couple if years it goes mouldy, I don't know why. Looked it up and that can happen if it's dry, but I've watered it a lot. It looks magnificent on a North wall at Sissinghurst.

I have a blue Mrs Cholmondeley group 2 clematis at the southern end of my garden and it has done very well, big blooms.

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

Thankyou for your reply BL. I don't think it is the right clematis for my garden sadly, a shame because l liked the colour and flower form. I'm a bit inexperienced with group 2 clematis . I have one Rosemoor that l just chop down like a group 3. I didn't realise it was a group 2 when l bought it. It flowers well and has many stems from its base.
Mrs Cholmondeley is very pretty too.
  • I grow Perle d'Azure up here in Lancashire, not bad but there are plenty better. One of the best of the blues in my opinion is Semu, a really good vibrant blue.

Thankyou for the reply Richard. Semu is a good colour clematis.
I have now fallen for clematis v Chatsworth. Is that variety a good performer in your opinion?
I also very much like Richards Picotee it looks very special. Is it suitable for a hot sunny garden? My soil is rich and l keep my clematis moist.
