8yr old border shrub in South France suddenly started dying in small areas! can't see any parasites. The shrub is used to dry spells.  any ideas?

It's very mature and I can see areas that have clearly died right back. if you cannot see any signs on leaves or branches, check to see if a branch has snapped or damaged further down. For now, just prune out the dead areas. It's very possible the other branches in the areas will start to grow over that area eventually. Even though they can be drought tolerant, lay a thick layer of mulch each year.

I've had one that did that. Every year a few branches would die. I cut it right back, it regrew and was fine for a few years, then it started doing it again.
