I would like to buy my compost in bulk but I just don't have room to store it so I buy a couple of bags 50l at a time from the garden centre. Just discovered Jack's Magic last year and really like it. It's quite light and open, I think it has quite a bit of sand in it but has a good consistency. I used to buy the 120l bales but don't have the strength now to move them. It's fine at the shop buying them because they put them into the car for me but I then have to manhandle it out of the car in the garage to somewhere out of the way.

Not enough space for the amount I would need but useful for mulching, although I prefer manure in late autumn/winter ready to work in late Spring if the worms haven't already. Lidl compost is very good and they've just got more in stock now.
I have just opened two bags of b&Q verve compost. The first bag is nonpeat and is awful. Very twiggy and even a few pebbles. The second bag is peat based and slightly better but still not what I would call good. The cheapo wilkos compost and small Poundland bags were better. I will use I have from B&Q to top up a few old pots but I won’t be buying anymore this year.

I tried Verve, only once, never again, I suppose it’s ok if you need to fill deep raised beds, I use the Lidl’s and other cheap brands for that. As I grow lots of seeds and cuttings, I like a really nice good compost. I buy it from my GC. I don’t buy plants so I can buy lots of compost without guilt😀

Well, I ended up going for the Homebase option of J Arthur Bowers 120 litre which was only £5 over the weekend - thanks @a1154. I also agree that this doesn't work out any more than the bulk loads - though quality? There's a scene in the West Wing where Leo says the 2 things you don't want to see made are laws and sausages. I imagine you can probably add the big DIY stores compost to that list, but if you're on a tight budget ya gotta do what ya gotta do!
