Squirrels in your garden. Does it bother you much yes or no?

Late to this thread. Suffice to say, the word "squirrels" is rarely uttered here without being preceded by "Bl***y"! I wouldn't do them any harm, and they can be quite entertaining, but they are also a massive pain and cause havoc. Between them and the foxes (also rather beautiful and entertaining but rather damaging and full of foul poo) I do quite a lot of running out of the back door yelling and clapping...

Funny how gardening is so much about foul poo, my gardening at least. Pigeon, fox, cat, dog, frog, sparrow (but mostly, prolifically, smellily, endlessly cat). At least no deer, badger or neighbour. We must count our blessings where they fall.
  • I used to like having squirrels in my garden but I have recently started feeding birds and am finding that the squirrels are trying to eat their food too. Does anyone have any suggestions about how I might be able to feed the birds and the squirrels at the same time?

I have two squirrel-proof bird feeders - these (one Hexihaus, one Roundhaus, both compact) - and the really are squirrel proof. I've had the Roundhaus for about four years and they've not got in yet. Even the parakeets have had a good go and can't get to the food.

The things I don't like about squirrels are the breaking of stems on the climbing plants as they tear across the top of the fence and their distribution of Walnuts from the tree next door (I have to weed out the baby trees and American Walnut seedlings get tough very quickly).  The things I do like are, they are wildlife and I love all wildlife and they are cute with their likkle hands as they dig holes in my lawn.  I planted a couple of cobnuts and do not expect to see any fruit from them but it might stop them self-seeding.  I prefer them to rabbits, at least they leave my plants alone.

It did when one ran off with a bird feeder... they're only occasional visitors here.

I have posted this before but here goes, to stop the Grey Squirrels getting to the seed feeders I greased the pole holding the feeders, that was a few years ago they never returned, they had been a nuisance.

Hate them. Pests. Nuisances. Steal all the bird food

We have the occasional visitor, so they’re no issue. I’d prefer reds though.

Even with putting chicken wire over my pots, they come and absolutely raid any bulbs and seeds in there, came home recently to find they'd obliterated my just put outside again parsley pot to the point I'm sure it won't be salvegable.

They actually ripped up a load of my daffs to demolish the bulbs. They're a serious pest!
