Help! I can't tell what type of soil I have

I need some help - I can't tell what soil type I have! I'm in North Devon, just south of Exmoor. The soil is very stony but doesn't seem to be sandy exactly - although it feels gritty it will hold in a ball when moist (if I can get a handful without stones!). Underneath the topsoil (only a foot in places) there's shale. The soil is fairly free-draining but does stay moist in most conditions. It's more or less neutral, tending slightly to alkalinity. Can anyone help?

Sounds similar to ours, free-draining gritty loam ... but ours is over chalk so alkaline.

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

Thanks Dove - I suspect many people's gardens don't fall neatly into the categories of soil types. It's good to know I'm not alone!
