Conifer Hegde Upkeep?

Hello all,

I’m considering planting some sort of conifer hedge (perhaps a leylandii?) around my garden to replace my dilapidated fence. But I have some questions about maintenance and upkeep. From what I’ve read online about conifer hedges, the upkeep is quite minimal. However, looking at conifers hedges in other people gardes, I do see a lot of out of control growth and bald spots.

Are conifers more tricky to care for than the online information suggests, or are my neighbours just poor gardeners? Are there any alternatives you would recommend?

I would think very carefully before using laylandi (spelling) its the cause of many disputes.

I had two 'runs' at my last place which were already in-situ before we purchased the property. They do need regular trimming as they can easily get out of control. If I recall correctly I gave them a light trim with a hedge strimmer twice a year. You cannot cut back into brown wood on them as they will not grow back so it is important to regularly keep them in check. The disputes and legislation relates to trees over 2m I believe so if you keep them to this height you shouldn't have any issues. Lots on the internet i.e.

They grow quite wide as well as tall so you will lose some of your garden if space is a concern.

I'm sure the experienced folks on here can offer up some alternative suggestions as well.

I looked at this a while ago.  I was advised to buy Red Cedar instead of Lleylandii.  It grows fairly quickly (not as quick as leylandii though) and it does not have the same problems re cutting into old wood.  Check it out and see what you think.
