Applying granular fertiliser to containers

This might sound like a stupid question, but I have several large pots containing climbers and they are each topped with about an inch of grit. Do I need to scrape it away before applying a granular fertiliser, or can I just sprinkle it on top before rain is forecast and let that water it in for me?

I do the same with mine.
I sprinkle just a little on then just go over the top with a small gardening hand fork to work it through the grit.
If you just sprinkle it on and leave it, it tends to clump

The last lot I bought said it must be mixed into the soil as it was only activated by being warm in the soil. Not sure about that, but at least if it's mixed into the soil then you know the nutrients will be released closer to the roots.
