    My stone mason OH says that’s not a proper keystone, it’s cracked right through and needs redoing ..quickly.  He’s cut keystones in granite, should be much wider at the top.

    The wooden form is the usual way to do it but the stones or bricks used still have to be properly shaped for it all to hold.

    I do agree with Papi Jo about that gate.  I would have chosen one, or had it cut, to mirror the arch thus making a pleasing circle.

  • We have had the arch repaired - well 3 or 4 bricks replaced and we were told if this did not hold for more than a few years then it would be best to have the arch rebuilt. We think that since the arch was originally made during a freezing cold spell of weather this may be partly the cause of the cracks.
