Remove bark much from border to make way for perennials?

  I was always told to leave a gap around stem, which I always do and has worked. Didn’t realise that the nature of the mulch calls for this. Always happy to learn. Thanks.

  Just an update.... both the dicentra and 4 out of 5 rozzanes have pushed through the 3-4 inch bark mulch as you all predicted. Thanks again for your reassurance.

  I think maybe hellebores don't like mulch near them, but most others would seem to do okay.
