What can I plant in part shaded garden?

Shelley20Shelley20 Posts: 36
I am going to buy some flowers to plant today. My garden is both sunny and shaded depending on the time of day, which flowers/plants would be for that? Lots of websites advising to plant in full sun? New gardener here so not sure which is best  :D
looking for nice bright colours to put in pots.

I've gone for woodland bulbs in a shaded spot in my garden - English bluebells (not Spanish - they're not as nice and are endangering the native bluebells), winter aconites etc. Hardy geraniums can handle a little shade and geranium phaeum can handle a lot. Cyclamen purpurascens are a recent addition to a patch in partial shade.

Thank you for the reply, are these ok to put in a pot?
Garden is needing some drainage  which we will be doing in a couple of months so just stocking up on pots for now until it’s sorted.

As far as I'm aware they should all be fine in pots as long as they're well drained. I'll defer to the experts on this site though... I'm still learning too! :)

Haha well there’s only one way to find out! One side of my garden is really dry and doesn’t even get weeds and the other side is too wet! We’re sorting it in the summer but don’t want to wait until then to get some colour into it.  Thank you for the advice :)
  • Hellebores like partial shade.

You could try heucheras, hostas and fuchsias.

Plenty of plants do fine in partial shade. Aquilegias, Lamprocapnos Spectabilis, many types of Campanulas and Alchemilla Mollis can do fine there. Some garden centres may start stocking these plants soon. For later in the season, Thalictrums and Astilbes adds colour and form. Japanese Anemones and hard Fuchsias can take the colour right into November.

For now, in pots, why not mix Bellis Perennis with Violas/Pansies or the many bedding Primroses.

Dicentra spectabilis can be added to the list from everyone. Hypericum as a shrub will take quite a lot of shade, as will the camellia/certain Rhododendrons if your soil pH is neutral/acidic if not put them in large pots. Rhododendrons prefer a wider circumference than depth.

If you've got quite large pots and some form of support, you could try clematis - there are some varieties that tolerate shade. Have a look at the labels to be sure.
