Apple planting question

Can I plant an apple tree near a dead one?
The tree died of old age and drought rather than disease.
In London. Keen but lazy.

    I don't see why not. They don't have anything problematical like roses. The soil may be impoverished and need  improving before you plant.

    I think you should fertilize the soil and apply water before the plantation of your desired tree.
