Thank you all for your most helpful replies. Having read this thread after replying to the other one, I would say that it is fuchsia microphylla. The pictures and descriptions on Burncoose Nursery's website are exactly it. Sadly, it seems that I may have lost it as it's only half hardy and the weather has been extreme for South Devon. I would like to do what I can to save it for sentimental reasons, so is it worth digging it up and planting in a pot with fresh compost and putting in a sheltered spot. It's in an east facing fairly exposed flower bed in clay soil at the moment.
