Both the Fuchsias that have been suggested, microphylla and thymifolia, are encliandra fuchsias so I'm sure you're right Fritillary. It's a type rather than a specific Fuchsia. There are two of these threads and the two suggestions may not be in the same one

Thanks Nut. I should have looked at the links that were posted and then I would have seen they were the same. :)

Thank you all very much for your replies. I am inclined to think that it is a Fuchsia, possibly Thymifoia. This plant was one that my mother gave me several years ago from her garden. It was originally in a pot on a balcony and after the first summer I cut it back like any hardy fuchsia but didn't grow back vigorously. However it did grow again and is now in its second garden bed ( having moved house)  It is about 5' tall with a mixture of taller more woody looking stems with thinner shorter ones making up the body of it so to speak. I live in South Devon where it is relatively warm, so generally it retains its leaves and flowers for most of the year. The weather we have had is exceptional and had I thought it would be affected I would have dug it up as it is one of some precious plants that came from my Mums garden, who is now sadly no longer with us. Any advice received on how to save it and care for it in the future is much appreciated.
