Liriodendron tulipifera

Just received an e-mail from Hayloft Plants showing a flowering 'Tulip-Tree' !
Whilst not decrying the merits and primordial interest of such a primitive species (related to Magnolias) , do people realise that they take at least 30-40 years to attain flowering size , by which time they're so high up you can't see them anyway !

My brother had one in the front garden of a his old house. The couple next door bought their house new in 1934 and say it was planted soon afterwards. I never saw it flower.

The leaves are interesting though... and turn a lovely yellow in autumn.   :)

They are forest trees so you need a really big garden to do them justice.

We have one that started flowering after 12 years.  Very lovely, but quite big.  Also quite fragile so branches drop off very easily, and we lost the top of it in a snow storm a few years ago so it's an odd shape now.   Does grow quickly tho'.
