Plants for embankment

Hi, Now moved to a house which has a stream at the bottom of the garden.  The garden is higher and therefore has an embankment that is presently bare as I killed off all the weeds.  Unfortunately, the weeds were holding the soil in place which I didn't allow for.  I need to plant some ground cover along the embankment to stop further soil ending up in the stream.  The only problem is that in the summer, the stream dries up and the embankment gets extremely dry and hot from the sun. At present the water level is rather high so I need the impossible really; plants that will take drenching and also drought.  I know I am asking a lot but is there such a plant that will tolerate these conditions?

Thank you in advance.

Vinca minor might be worth considering. I have it (& major) on an embankment so it is relatively free-draining but looking on the RHS site it seems also happy in 'poorly-drained' conditions. Will also tolerate sunny or shaded aspects.

  • Hah, hah, I dug lots of Vinca minor out when I first moved to the house. However, that is a good one I think for that position.  It does spread a lot and doesn't seem to mind where it is.

    Thank you for the advice.

For ground cover you could try Houttuynia Cordata. They do fine is sun and shade and can cope in poor draining soils but in dry soils, they just don't spread as much, but it doesn't affect them much.
