Can we make an exception for gooseberry sawfly?  Only asking.

    Otherwise the answer is NEVER!

Those you fight with nematodes, no toxines required.

  • I'm not going to tempt fate by saying that the saw flies haven't found my gooseberries ........yet  image

....... or maybe it's down to all the blackbirds, bluetits and dunnocks that hop around the fruit patch and eat the sawfly caterpillars before I see them image

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

  • Thanks for replies.

Since a neighbour dug up a large shrub, which the birds used as corridor from rear to front of property, the birds haven't done much greenfly clearance on my climbing rose at the front.

With being stuck in a wheelchair I can't reach the heights for squishing. This year I will see what impact planting spring onion at it's base might have. Maybe I will have to put chives in hanging baskets either side as well.

    I live in hope.

  • Shame about the shrub ... can you hang a birdfeeder near your climbing rose to get the birds to pay attention to that part of the garden?  I find the bluetits like the suet sprinkles with insects/mealworms in.

If you can't reach to squish, can you squirt with a jet of water from a hosepipe?  That'll get rid of greenfly and blackfly.

    Good luck image
