pruning roses

peteSpeteS Posts: 966

I was wondering if it is OK to cut back my shrub roses tomorrow. Whilst it is quite mild at the moment, we are apparently set to have a spell of bitterly cold Siberian weather from the east come the weekend. Could this damage the plants if I did any cutting back now.

I cut  a shrub rose back today, as I needed to get around it. The problem would be if it was mild, new growth started then the new growth could be damaged by hard frosts. I think if it goes cold next week, the  bush is unlikely to have started new growth. I would not prune ordinary roses hard to six inches at this stage. I only cut the bush rose back by half.
