I'm wondering what to put under my sweet peas - which will be grown in big planters - to cover up the straggly lower stems. Any ideas? I was wondering about marigolds or wallflower, but worry it might look a bit 'too much' when everything blooms.
I think low tumbling plants suit better. What about colourful Nasturtiums. Muted colours like Milkmaid if you prefer more pastel shades. Some can get quite tall and even scramble upwards.
I put diascia - very undemanding and tolerant, blooms all summer long, and although sold as an annual, I've had mine in raised beds (unprotected) for four years (in SE UK) and they go from strength to strength. They are no good for pollinators but lovely to look at.
I wouldnt underplant sweet peas, they are very greedy feeders, and if you plant them nice and thickly there shouldnt be a problem, I do have summer bulbs under mine which will start coming up and be out by the time the sweet peas have finnished.

I find nasturtiums rather thuggish, and I think they might smother sweet peas. Diascia sound like a good idea. Might try that
Thanks folks! All great suggestions. Haven't heard of diascia - I might give those a go.
