Laurel planted too close??

Hi everyone,

Would like your thoughts on this if you wouldn’t mind...

We have recently had a length of cherry laurels planted, they are 4ft saplings. Our gardener has planted them side by side, they may have a few inches either side before the next sapling.

Now, I’m not a gardener, but I always believed that laurels should be planted 3 or 4 per metre. Ours seem incredibly packed in with absolutely no room to grow. Is there another reason why he would have done this and will they eventually suffer with this spacing?

What was he thinking?? I would love your opinions on this before I contact him about it.

Thanks!

they're too close, 3 a metre is more than enough.

Is your gardener a proper gardener or someone who does jobs in a garden?

  • No idea what he was thinking but it wasn't about gardening image

I'd plant them as you've said ... A staggered double row if you want if particularly thick but I don't think cherry laurel really needs that.

Does he know what he's doing in other gardening tasks?  Has the ground been prepared properly?

Is he a trained gardener or a jobbing lawn cutter and hedge trimmer?

Is he willing and capable of doing the job properly if you get him back to remedy the bad work ?

  • Thank you all for  that, he is supposedly RHS trained. He certainly charges rates that go with that territory as well.

He did prepare the ground on the day, added compost, fish blood and bone and also rooting hormone.

I am baffled as to why he has done this...

  • My mind is boggled ............. sounds like his is as well .................. RHS trained imageimageimage

Maybe he should read this https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?PID=377

In my opinion, cherry laurels should be planted as thin as one per mile.image

  • have you actually seen this guys certificates? as he might just be saying he has the training to charge more, going on that planting style he might more likely have qualification from cowboys school!
