I've been googling pictures of dogwood trees since I had that thought. I think you're right, the branches don't look big enough to cause much (if any) damage. I think I will leave this tree in place and see what happens. I shall enjoy watching it flower over the years.
Nothing to do with the question and answers here , but talking of Dogwoods ; does anyone grow Cornus mas or the Cornelian Cherry as it's known ?
One garden I frequent has a twenty-foot plus specimen of this , (never prune this sp.) and it's in full glorious bloom today . At its best in February .
I don't (think I) have one here (but who knows under all the brambles and bamboo grove and whatever else is out there! ) So far I've found a Cornus Florida, two rather large, beautiful camellias and a few others that were a complete, but very pleasant surprise!
Would be nice to have something blooming this time of the year (other than the camellias) so I'll keep an eye out for the Cornus Mas in the local gardening centres. Thank you!

Not a lot ... it's not something that'd worry me.
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
Thank you all for your helpful advice!
